Job summary

Optum is seeking a Lead AI/ML Engineer to design, develop, deploy, and scale enterprise AI/ML solutions that improve clinical outcomes, patient engagement, and operations. This role combines hands-on development with architecture guidance and mentorship across engineering teams.

The position supports remote nationwide or office-based work in MN/DC, following a largely office-based schedule with four in-office days per week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years of software engineering / ML engineering experience in lieu of degree.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience across all phases of the SDLC.
• 3+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying production‑grade ML solutions in cloud environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
• 3+ years of programming with Python and SQL or PySpark.
• 2+ years of experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for production software delivery.
• Experience with large‑scale distributed data and computing platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end design, development, deployment, and operationalization of production‑grade ML models and AI-enabled software solutions.
• Build and support scalable, cloud-based AI/ML systems, data pipelines, and feature workflows for batch and real‑time workloads.
• Establish and drive MLOps practices including CI/CD automation, testing, drift detection, retraining, and governance.
• Manage, monitor, and optimize production ML systems for reliability, scalability, and performance.
• Provide technical leadership, architecture guidance, and mentorship to engineers; drive engineering excellence across teams.
• Partner with product management, data science, architecture, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into AI capabilities.
