Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Principal Production Engineer to scale our data platform for millions of developers. You will lead reliability initiatives, work with product teams on design reviews, and shape how data is modeled and accessed to ensure performance and operability at scale.

Your role includes designing SDKs, setting SLOs, and documenting systems health while participating in on-call rotations and disaster recovery planning.

Qualifications

• 11+ years experience in software engineering or related discipline with production software delivery
• 10+ years experience if Associate's degree alternative
• 9+ years experience with Bachelor's degree pathway
• 7+ years with Master's + related field
• 5+ years with Doctorate + related field
• Equivalent experience accepted
• 5+ years operating large-scale distributed systems in production

Responsibilities

• Lead design reviews with product teams to model, access, and scale data
• Design and ship SDKs, client libraries, and tooling used by applications
• Set reliability strategy for GitHub's database platforms across systems
• Write technical docs and advocate for health and quality of systems
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response
• Develop disaster recovery, load shedding, and regional failover plans
