Job summary

Optum Tech is seeking a Principal Architect to lead engineering for Claims Core Ops, guiding reliability, modernization, and strategic evolution of mission-critical claims systems. You will partner with product, architecture, and platform teams to set a multi-year technology strategy and drive cross-functional execution across a large engineering organization.

You will balance legacy stability with cloud migration, own production performance, and ensure compliance with HIPAA, SOC, PCI.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior people leadership roles managing managers
• 6+ years of platform modernization and transformation experience
• 6+ years of experience modernizing or scaling a transaction heavy platform
• 5+ years of end-to-end platform accountability for reliability and operational health
• 5+ years of hands-on technical leadership directing architectural decisions
• 5+ years of experience integrating internal platforms with third party SaaS vendors
• Healthcare background
• Experience leading 15-25 engineers including 3-4 direct managers
• Strong secure SDLC and DevSecOps experience in regulated environments (PCI, SOC, HIPAA)
• Proven leadership in hiring, development, and succession planning

Responsibilities

• Provide enterprise-wide engineering leadership for Claims Core Ops applications
• Own end-to-end accountability for claims operational capability from intake to downstream integration
• Serve as the senior engineering counterpart to Claims Operations and Product leadership
• Define and execute a multi-year modernization roadmap for Claims Core Ops
• Establish architectural direction aligned with enterprise standards and security
• Balance legacy stability with cloud migration and platform simplification
• Own production stability, availability, and performance for high-volume transactions
• Ensure risk governance, audit readiness, and remediation plans
• Lead delivery of regulatory mandates and new capabilities
• Drive cloud-native adoption and API-first platform architectures
• Sponsor AI-enabled engineering tools to improve productivity and quality
• Meet HIPAA, SOC, PCI and enterprise security standards
• Build and retain high-performing engineering leaders
• Foster ownership, inclusion, and continuous learning
• Prepare executive updates on delivery health and risk
• Represent Claims Core Ops Engineering in governance forums
