Job summary

Electric Power Engineers, LLC is hiring a Power Systems Optimization Engineer to design and productionize optimization methods for grid planning. You will work with planners and developers to build scalable tools that resolve transmission and operational challenges in a modern energy landscape.

You will prototype in Python, validate results against AC power flow, and communicate complex trade-offs to clients and engineers.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
• 3+ years of optimizing power systems in industry or research.
• Strong foundation in linear, mixed-integer, nonlinear programming, relaxations, and decomposition.
• Proficiency in Python and optimization frameworks (Pyomo, JuMP, CVXPY, PuLP) with solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX, Xpress, HiGHS).
• Solid understanding of power flow, contingency analysis, and transmission planning concepts.
• Excellent communication skills to explain models to engineers and non-technical audiences.
• Preferred: hands-on experience with transmission planning or interconnection studies using PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, TSAT, or TARA.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of optimization methods for transmission upgrades, storage, and mitigations.
• Prototype in Python and validate against full AC power flow results.
• Collaborate with planners, software developers, and product owners to deploy scalable tools.
• Validate and benchmark portfolios; quantify optimality gaps and runtimes.
• Explain results, trade-offs, and assumptions to engineers and clients; support onboarding.
• Write methodology papers, model formulations, and validation reports.
• Collaborate with transmission planners to translate constraints into model objectives.
