Job summary

Block, Inc. seeks a senior software engineer to design, build, and scale customer-facing payment APIs powering Square, Cash App, and Afterpay. You will lead complex projects end-to-end, operate high-volume production systems, and apply AI-assisted tools while ensuring correctness and security.

This hands-on role requires strong experience with payments, distributed systems, and mentoring, with remote work options across the US and a competitive pay package.

Qualifications

• Experience building customer-facing financial APIs.
• Experience operating high-volume distributed systems with emphasis on correctness and reliability.
• Minimum 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years with a Master’s; or a PhD with 3 years.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, maintain, and scale customer-facing payment APIs.
• Lead complex engineering projects from design through production.
• Operate critical payment systems serving worldwide traffic and participate in on-call rotations.
• Improve performance, observability, fault tolerance, and security.
• Use AI-assisted tools for design, implementation, testing, and debugging.
• Shape technical decisions and mentor teammates through reviews and documentation.
