Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' St. Louis Health Care System seeks MRTs (Coders) in the Health Information Management (HIM) section.

Coders classify medical data from patient records in hospital and physician-based settings and assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes for diagnoses and procedures. The role emphasizes accurate coding, documentation review, and auditing to support compliant, high-quality care.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and coding concepts.
• Experience or education meeting VA basic requirements for MRT (Coder).
• Mastery level coding certification per VA standards.

Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS to assign codes.
• Review and validate coded data for accuracy and completeness.
• Audit coding accuracy and provide feedback to improve quality.
• Maintain databases and generate reports on coding activities.
• Provide coding consultation to clinicians and coders as needed.
• Support documentation quality and regulatory compliance.
