Qualifications

  • United States citizenship requirement applies.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • 1 year of creditable experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical coding and health records.
  • Substitution options include an associate degree with 12+ semester hours in HIM or an AHIMA/AAPC training program.
  • Certification through AHIMA, AAPC or equivalent is preferred or required depending on the grade level.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, diseases to assign codes to patient encounters.
  • Select and assign codes from ICD-CM, CPT, and HCPCS as appropriate.
  • Work under supervision to learn coding practices and guidelines.
  • Ensure codes reflect documentation and follow coding conventions and policy.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded data.
