Qualifications

  • 1 year of creditable experience or education showing knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health record structure.
  • Associate degree with 12+ semester hours in health information technology/management or related field.
  • AHIMA-approved coding program or equivalent training leading to coding certification eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Classify and code medical data from patient health records in hospital or physician-based settings.
  • Apply ICD-CM, PCS, CPT guidelines to inpatient and outpatient records.
  • Abstract relevant information and ensure documentation supports assigned codes.
