Job summary

Optum is seeking a board-certified Medical Director specializing in transplantation and cellular therapies. This remote, senior physician role supports enterprise clinical services with evidence-based decision-making and quality programs across COEs.

The candidate will lead utilization management, review clinical guidelines, and collaborate with network and client stakeholders to drive high-quality coverage decisions and program development.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
• Current, unrestricted physician license.
• Board certification through an ABMS or AOA recognized specialty board.
• Specialized expertise in Hematology/Oncology with experience in BMT, stem cell transplantation, CAR-T or related cellular therapy programs.
• 5+ years of clinical experience in transplantation/cellular therapy.
• Experience evaluating clinical literature, evidence-based guidelines, quality metrics, and healthcare outcomes.
• Experience utilizing clinical and operational data to support quality improvement.
• Knowledge of NCQA, URAC, CMS, and state/federal regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and influence stakeholders.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a clinical subject matter expert for solid organ transplantation, BMT, CAR-T therapies, and cellular therapies.
• Support benefit coverage determinations, medical necessity reviews, and utilization management.
• Evaluate transplant and cellular therapy guidelines and COE criteria.
• Interpret emerging clinical evidence and regulatory developments related to transplantation and therapies.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to assess quality outcomes and accreditation standards.
• Provide clinical consultation for new business opportunities and program development.
• Participate in client discussions, clinical consultations, and program reviews.
• Build relationships with client medical directors and transplant centers.
• Support qualification, designation, and performance review for COEs.
• Analyze data to identify trends and opportunities for quality improvement.
• Engage in peer-to-peer discussions on coverage determinations and complex cases.
• Represent the organization at professional meetings and industry bodies.
