Job summary

UL Research Institutes is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for the Digital Safety Research Institute (DSRI). This remote role leads development of large-scale software platforms, guides architectural decisions, and mentors junior engineers.

You will drive integration across platforms, ensure robust engineering practices, and contribute to safety-focused AI evaluation work. You will collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions, set technical direction, and participate in hiring

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Master's degree is preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in software development with focus on platform security.

Responsibilities

• Lead, define, and develop full-stack software systems and platforms enabling large-scale research, evaluation, and dissemination of safety insights.
• Implement service boundaries, data model evolution, and integration patterns between platforms and pipelines.
• Set technical direction across projects, aligning architecture with DSRI priorities and AI evaluation ecosystem.
• Iteratively design complex, ambiguous systems with evolving requirements.
• Maintain engineering standards and promote AI-assisted engineering best practices.
• Provide guidance on AI coding tools usage and mentor junior engineers.
• Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team and support hiring and onboarding.
• Represent technical work across the organization and in external settings.
• Contribute to department and cross-functional initiatives.
