Job summary

UL Research Institutes seeks a Lead AI Research Scientist II to direct advanced research across NLP, CV, SP, and AI safety. This remote-based role leads experimental design, data analysis, and collaboration with Digital Safety teams to advance safety science.

You will shape research programs, secure competitive funding, and serve as principal investigator for DSRI initiatives, while staying ahead of evolving AI technologies and industry partnerships.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science with a focus in the applicable AI area and 8+ years of directly related research experience.
• Master's in Computer Science (AI focus) with 10+ years of related research experience.
• Bachelor's in Computer Science (AI focus) with 12+ years of related research experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and design independent test and evaluation research programs to protect the public from AI systems harms.
• Lead the development of research proposals to secure funding using Heilmeier criteria.
• Serve as a principal investigator for DSRI’s independent test and evaluation programs.
• Apply AI and software engineering concepts to execute and manage research programs.
• Analyze experimental results to identify causes and improve design objectives.
• Plan procedures to validate testing and evaluation results.
• Design and execute research challenges and workshops at conferences.
• Stay current by reading papers and attending conferences.
