Job summary

Optum Tech is seeking a Lead AI/ML Engineer to design, build, and operationalize AI capabilities for the Enterprise Finance organization. You will lead development of LLM workflows, RAG, and AI governance in production.

The role supports remote work from anywhere in the U.S., with in-office four days/week required for Minneapolis or DC-area hires. Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of related experience
• 5+ years in software/AI engineering
• 3+ years in cloud-native architectures and scalable systems
• 2+ years building/producing generative AI & LLM apps
• 2+ years prompt engineering, RAG, AI agents, governance
• Experience with Responsible AI, security, privacy and compliance

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions for complex business challenges with responsible AI
• Create AI solution architectures aligned with objectives, risk, and governance
• Build LLM workflows, prompt orchestration, agents, RAG apps, model integrations
• Develop prompting strategies, grounding, tool-calling patterns, guardrails
• Evaluate trends to inform design, platform capabilities, and innovation
• Leverage enterprise AI tools to automate workflows and improve productivity
• Partner with Data Engineering for trusted data access
• Establish evaluation frameworks, datasets, scoring rubrics, model benchmarks
• Monitor quality, latency, cost, and hallucination risk
• Support production readiness with observability and documentation
