Job summary

RedLine Performance Solutions, LLC. seeks an HPC Scientific Applications Programmer to modernize UFS workflows used by the National Weather Service in College Park, MD. The role involves collaboration with scientists and engineers to build flexible, testable tools for complex earth system models.

Responsibilities include implementing configuration managers, CI practices, and user-friendly interfaces, while supporting cross-agency teams and rigorous documentation in a Linux environment.

Qualifications

• Shell scripting and Python (OO) experience.
• MPI/OpenMP HPC platform experience.
• Background in physical sciences and/or mathematics with numerical modeling.
• Experience with earth system models.
• Modern software engineering practices (requirements, design, prototyping, version control, integration, testing, and documentation).
• Developing software in a Linux environment.
• Build/testing tools: cmake, ctest, pytest.
• Knowledge of package managers, especially Spack.
• Strong English communication and teamwork across diverse agencies.
• Proficiency in C++ and Fortran 95+ is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop modern configuration managers to connect with standard scientific workflow systems (Rocoto, ecFlow, Cylc).
• Incorporate unit testing and CI practices; follow agile development processes.
• Create utilities and tools integrating into workflows for specific applications.
• Apply modern code management principles (GitFlow and repositories).
• Develop graphical interfaces for scientists to configure experiments.
• Modularize workflows to allow different coupled earth system components.
• Support modular capabilities in coupled configurations and mediators.
• Provide guidance to science teams developing various applications.
• Maintain documentation standards used by community model development.
