Job summary

Nelnet is hiring a Data Pipeline Engineer to design, build, and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud for GenAI use cases. You will classify data with Dataplex and DLP, enforce governance, and collaborate with the GCP/Gemini team to ensure data readiness and secure access.

Responsibilities include ELT/ETL ingestion, performance optimization, and documenting data flows for audit. Requires strong SQL, Python, and cloud experience; FERPA awareness is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
• Hands-on experience building data pipelines and ELT/ETL processes for analytics or GenAI use cases on a major cloud data platform.
• Strong SQL skills and Python for pipeline development and data transformation.
• Experience with data governance and classification tooling (Dataplex, DLP) and data security controls.
• Familiarity with FERPA and education/public sector data compliance recommended.
• Google Cloud certification (Professional Data Engineer) preferred.
• Ability to translate technical requirements into scalable data pipelines.
• Experience collaborating with client/partner technical teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using BigQuery and Dataflow (or Airflow) for GenAI use cases.
• Develop ELT/ETL processes for batch ingestion of client data into Google Cloud analytics stores.
• Monitor pipeline reliability, performance, and cost; optimize BigQuery usage.
• Classify and tag data with Dataplex and DLP to identify sensitive data before AI use.
• Define data access controls and governance for education and public sector data.
• Design data models and schemas supporting current and reusable patterns across engagements.
• Partner with client teams to understand constraints and data access.
