Job summary

The American Heart Association is seeking a part-time Epidemiology Intern to support the Annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update. This role offers hands-on experience with national surveillance datasets, epidemiologic analyses, and reproducible public health research in a nonprofit setting.

You will work 20–25 hours per week remotely, gaining skills in data extraction, reporting, and SOP development while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics, or a related field.
• Working knowledge of statistical software such as cloud-based SAS and/or R required.
• Interest in and commitment to working with chronic disease data and populations; focus on chronic disease initiatives.
• Ability to conduct quantitative analyses, interpret public health data, and document procedures with multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience using enterprise or AI tools to support data analysis, documentation, or reporting is preferred.
• Coursework or experience in epidemiologic methods, statistics, and population health research.

Responsibilities

• Extracting, analyzing and summarizing prevalence, mortality, and health care utilization, expenditure and outcome data using national data sets (i.e., NHANES, NHIS, CDC WONDER, HCUP, MEPS, etc.).
• Assisting with the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of cardiovascular disease and stroke-related data.
• Creating and updating statistical tables, figures, charts, and supporting documentation for scientific reports and publications.
• Developing and maintaining SOPs, analytic documentation, and process guides for data extraction, analysis, reporting, and quality assurance activities.
• Collaborating with epidemiologists, data scientists, and scientific volunteers to respond to data requests and support annual publication activities.
