Job summary

Ad Hoc is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a remote team delivering backend services in Java, Spring Boot, and REST APIs. You will balance hands-on coding with people management, guide architecture and delivery, and drive the adoption of best practices across the team.

You will be responsible for mentoring engineers, coordinating with product and program leadership, and ensuring high-quality, scalable backend systems across enterprise applications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required or equivalent professional experience.
• 9+ years of software engineering experience.
• 5+ years of experience with Spring and Spring Boot.
• 5+ years designing, developing, or integrating RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Experience leading software engineers through delivery and mentorship.
• Experience providing performance feedback and managing priorities.
• Strong Java/Spring Boot background and API design.
• Recent hands-on experience reviewing code and troubleshooting backend systems.
• Experience with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and ORM frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support a team of software engineers for backend applications and services.
• Remain technically engaged through architecture, code reviews, and hands-on development as needed.
• Guide backend design using Java 17+, Spring, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Provide people management: 1:1s, coaching, performance feedback, career growth.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to set technical priorities and deliver solutions.
• Help engineers tackle complex technical challenges involving API architecture and data access.
• Establish and enforce engineering best practices: testing, maintainable code, reviews.
• Support Agile delivery, sprint planning, and blockers resolution.
• Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders; manage dependencies and risks.
• Assist with hiring, interviews, onboarding, and team development.
• Foster a collaborative, accountable engineering culture.
