Job summary

Cognizant is seeking an Emergency Department Coder to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance of medical coding across outpatient surgery, observation, emergency department, and related encounters. You will collaborate with physicians, coding professionals, and operational stakeholders to support regulatory compliance and revenue cycle excellence, while working from a home office on a fully remote basis.

This role requires CPC/CCS or equivalent certification and strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM,

Qualifications

• Certified CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding certification.
• Experience coding and auditing outpatient, observation, ED, and outpatient diagnostic encounters.
• Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS and regulatory guidelines.
• Experience using electronic encoder applications.
• Ability to interpret complex clinical documentation and discuss coding queries with physicians.
• Proven ability to meet productivity goals with at least 98% accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Review clinical documentation and assign diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Communicate with physicians to obtain clarification on diagnoses and procedures through the coding query process.
• Use encoder applications to assign accurate codes per company policies and regulatory guidelines.
• Perform peer reviews and quality audits of coding staff to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Prepare coding audit reports and recommendations for leadership.
• Maintain a minimum coding accuracy rate of 98% while meeting productivity standards.
