Job summary

Sutherland is seeking a Facility-Fee Emergency Department Medical Coder to accurately review and abstract ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS, and modifiers for ED encounters, ensuring compliant submissions and proper reimbursement.

Candidates should have 2+ years ED facility-fee outpatient coding, Injection and Infusion experience, an active AAPC/AHIMA credential, and the ability to work independently in a remote setting.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of facility-fee outpatient coding experience in Emergency Department services
• Injection and Infusion experience required
• Active AAPC or AHIMA coding certification required
• Able to work independently in a remote environment
• Epic experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

• Review ED records to assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and modifiers
• Assign facility E/M levels per ED guidelines and charging methodologies (ACEP tool)
• Analyze nursing, physician, ancillary, and diagnostic documents for complete code capture
• Apply CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer-specific requirements
• Review accounts for appropriate procedural services and injections/infusions when applicable
• Identify documentation gaps and communicate clarification needs
• Maintain compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and policy requirements
• Participate in coding quality reviews, audits, and process improvements
• Stay current on coding updates and reimbursement changes
• Collaborate with coding leadership, auditors, and client representatives to resolve issues
