Job summary

Cognizant is seeking an Emergency Department Coder to ensure accurate coding across outpatient surgery, observation, ED, and related encounters. You will query clinicians for clarification, use electronic encoder tools, and perform audits to uphold a 98% accuracy rate while meeting productivity standards.

The role is fully remote within the United States, with a salary range of $63,000 to $71,000 and participation in Cognizant’s incentive program.

Qualifications

• Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or CCS certification.
• Experience coding and auditing outpatient, observation, emergency department, and outpatient diagnostic encounters.
• Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS and applicable regulatory guidelines.
• Experience using electronic encoder applications and healthcare coding systems.
• Ability to interpret complex clinical documentation and communicate coding queries with clinicians.
• Proven ability to meet productivity goals while maintaining 98% accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Review clinical documentation and assign diagnosis and procedure codes for ED, outpatient surgery, observation, and outpatient encounters.
• Communicate with physicians to obtain clarification on diagnoses and procedures.
• Use encoder tools to assign codes per policy and regulatory guidelines.
• Perform peer reviews and quality audits of coding professionals for accuracy and compliance.
• Prepare and deliver coding audit reports, findings, and recommendations.
