Job summary

Octopus Energy is hiring a Backend Engineer (mid-level) to join the Devices and Low Carbon Tech teams in London. You will build scalable Django backends, ship features across multiple countries from a single codebase, and collaborate with hardware and product teams to extend device integrations.

You should have 3–4 years of Python web development experience, strong testing practices, and comfort with rapid delivery in a multi-tenant environment.

Qualifications

• 3–4 years of Python web app experience, preferably with Django.
• Experience with relational DBs and background tasks (Celery).
• Comfort with large multi-tenant codebases and API integrations.
• Pace over process; automated guardrails (CI, tests, linting).
• Interest in applying AI tools to development.

Responsibilities

• Take independent ownership of medium-sized technical features and components, delivering stable and production-ready code with minimal supervision.
• Ship continuously to trunk with small PRs and fast feedback.
• Build and extend a Django backend serving multiple countries from a single codebase.
• Integrate with upstream platform services (billing, CRM, auth, device control).
• Identify and address monitoring, alerting, and observability gaps to keep live systems reliable.
• Engage in technical design discussions, review code, and document PRs clearly.
• Address bugs or blockers and participate in incident management within the domain.
