Job summary

R1 RCM Inc. is seeking a strategic Director of Payroll to lead enterprise payroll operations for a large, complex workforce.

This role partners with HR, Finance, Tax, Legal and HR Technology to drive modernization, governance, and scalable processes across multi-state payroll. The position will establish and execute the enterprise payroll strategy and transformation roadmap, ensuring accurate, compliant payroll delivery while leveraging Workday to modernize timekeeping and controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• 12+ years of progressive payroll leadership experience
• 5+ years of experience leading managers and teams
• Strong experience with Workday Payroll and Timekeeping
• Proven experience developing and executing enterprise payroll strategies, operating models and roadmaps
• Deep expertise in payroll regulations, tax compliance, wage-and-hour laws, SOX controls and risk management
• Experience leading large-scale payroll transformation or shared services evolution
• Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions or geographic expansion
• Executive-level communication and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to lead through ambiguity and drive organizational change

Responsibilities

• Establish and execute the enterprise payroll strategy, operating model, governance framework, and multi-year transformation roadmap
• Lead the execution of accurate, compliant, resilient and scalable payroll delivery across a large, multi-state workforce
• Oversee payroll governance, regulatory compliance, tax operations, SOX controls, audits, risk management and financial stewardship
• Drive payroll modernization through technology, automation, data governance, and Workday optimization
• Build and develop a high-performing payroll organization with strong leadership succession
• Direct strategic vendor partnerships and governance programs to optimize service delivery and compliance
• Advise executives on payroll risks, workforce impacts, and investment decisions
• Lead payroll integration for enterprise initiatives including M&A and geographic expansion
• CPP certification preferred
