Job summary

UL Research Institutes is seeking a Director, Research for the Digital Safety Research Institute (DSRI). This is a remote position and you will lead research activities, develop methodologies, and prototype tools for AI/digital system assessments.

You will build partnerships with government, standards bodies, and industry, guide budgets and timelines, and mentor a team of researchers and engineers to advance DSRI’s mission.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science or related field with 10+ years in research project management.
• Experience mentoring distributed AI/digital research teams.
• Proven track record in test generation and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Lead research activities and engineering for advanced AI/digital system assessments.
• Establish partnerships with industry, government, standards bodies and AI safety teams.
• Lead transition of DSRI methodologies/tools to industry and government.
• Hire, lead, and develop researchers and engineers.
• Define KPIs to measure quality of DSRI AI/digital safety research.
• Manage DSRI projects to deliver on time and within budget.
• Develop proposals, budgets, and timelines for new projects.
• Review proposals and make funding decisions based on merit and feasibility.
• Communicate findings to partners and stakeholders through presentations and panels.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director on strategic planning and budgeting.
