Job summary

UL Research Institutes is seeking a Director of Research for the Digital Safety Research Institute (DSRI). This leadership role is remote and focuses on advancing AI/digital safety assessments through innovative methodologies and tools.

You will build partnerships across government, standards bodies, and industry, guide a team of researchers and engineers, and drive initiatives from proposal to deployment, with a strong emphasis on KPIs and delivering impact.

Qualifications

• PhD in CS or related discipline with strong research track record.
• Experience managing distributed AI/digital research and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead research and engineering activities for advanced methodologies and prototyping tools.
• Establish partnerships with industry, government, and standards bodies to advance AI/digital assessment tools.
• Lead transition of DSRI methodologies and tools to partners for deployment.
• Hire, lead, and develop researchers and engineers to create advanced methodologies.
• Define KPIs with the Executive Director to measure research quality.
• Manage DSRI projects to deliver on time and within budget.
• Develop proposals, budgets, and timelines for new projects.
• Review proposals for technical merit and feasibility and approve or reject.
• Communicate findings to partners and researchers, via presentations and panels.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director on strategic planning and budgeting.
