Job summary

Virga Labs, a woman-owned water and climate consulting firm based in Tucson, Arizona, seeks a Data Storyteller to translate complex data and scientific results into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.

You will own the storytelling core of projects, partner closely with the Creative Director and technical delivery team, and ensure every engagement tells a data-driven story rather than merely visualizing it.

Qualifications

• Professional experience in data journalism, science journalism/writing, or a closely related narrative-driven data field.
• Ability to build a compelling narrative from a dataset, not just visualize it.
• Working understanding of data — able to read, question, and interpret datasets.
• Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team and giving/receiving feedback.
• Experience with science, environmental, or policy storytelling; water/climate experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Own the narrative strategy for client projects and shape story arcs from data exploration to delivery.
• Translate technical and scientific data into clear, audience-appropriate stories for diverse stakeholders.
• Collaborate with the Creative Director and technical delivery team on data structuring and visualization with a narrative vantage point.
• Review and shape work to ensure storytelling quality and consistency across projects.
• Share storytelling techniques with the team and contribute to pitching storytelling-heavy engagements.
