Job summary

Whatnot is seeking a Data Engineer to build and scale the data backbone powering its growth. You will design reliable architectures, ship resilient pipelines, and create foundational data products used by internal teams and partners across payments, finance, and analytics.

The role requires strong data modeling, hands-on experience with modern data tooling, and a track record of delivering end-to-end data platforms.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience as a data or software engineer building data warehouses, distributed data systems, or event-driven architectures.
• Ability to design and implement data models using dimensional, Data Vault, or ledger-style techniques for analytical and transactional workloads.
• Deep hands-on expertise with modern data tooling across ingestion (Kafka, Debezium), transformation (dbt, Spark, Flink), orchestration (Dagster, Airflow), and observability (Monte Carlo, Great Expectations).
• Experience operating cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift, including schema design, cost optimization, and workload tuning.
• Proficient at writing production-grade code in Python or SQL, and integrating with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code workflows.
• Comfortable partnering across engineering, product, and analytics to translate messy business requirements into robust data systems.
• Thrive as a self-starter in a fast-moving environment, owning both technical design and operational outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own data architecture end-to-end: capture, model, and serve critical business data and define storage formats, compute patterns, and SLAs.
• Build mission-critical pipelines: develop streaming and batch workflows across domains with low latency and high accuracy.
• Design and implement canonical data models as source of truth for analytics, ML, and real-time apps.
• Enforce data quality at scale with tests, lineage, monitoring, and reconciliation.
• Automate operational workflows by reconciling data across services, warehouses, and external systems.
• Enable insights by exposing high-quality data through semantic layers, APIs, and real-time queries.
