Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, is seeking an experienced Medical Coding Specialist to join our HIM Coding team. You will code retrospective outpatient accounts using ICD-10-CM and CPT, ensuring accuracy and adherence to guidelines and edits.

The role requires 3 years of acute hospital-based coding experience and relevant certifications (RHIA/RHIT or CPC/ CCS). You will mentor others and support denial reviews as needed.

Qualifications

• 3 years of acute hospital-based coding experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Identifies most appropriate diagnoses and procedures to support medical necessity and edits.
• Abstracts data elements including discharge disposition, dates, and physician information.
• Reviews denials queues and provides recommendations to Coding Manager.
• Mentors or trains on coding service lines to ensure quality.

Responsibilities

• Code retrospective outpatient accounts using ICD-10-CM and CPT.
• Accurately identify primary diagnosis, procedures, modifiers, and secondary diagnoses.
• Abstract required data elements for coding accuracy and compliance.
• Review denials and assist in revenue integrity improvements.
• Flag when physician queries are needed and route appropriately.
• Maintain Quality and Productivity Standards in HIM Coding.
• Mentor/train others as requested.
• Other duties as assigned
