Job Description

The Remote Chef Manager is responsible for the overall performance management of the assigned area and/or camp. Responsibilities include hands-on preparation and oversight of all food service, as well as managing camp staff such as kitchen, housekeeping, janitorial/expeditor, and maintenance teams. Procurement, inventory, and budget management are integral parts of this role. All duties must align with NMS’s mission, vision, values, and departmental policies, practices, and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary resource for NMS food service, housekeeping, and maintenance staff.
  • Track and deliver performance to meet key performance indicators.
  • Coach and develop employees.
  • Implement continuous improvement strategies within NMS performance excellence initiatives.
  • Foster a “One Team” dynamic within the organization.
  • Coordinate service delivery, develop business plans, and oversee operations.
  • Establish supervision systems and operating procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with business practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain client relationships, market services, and resolve issues.
  • Lead and motivate staff through effective communication.
  • Define responsibilities, authorities, and accountability for staff.
  • Develop and manage budgets, approve expenditures, and prepare bid materials and menus for contracts.
  • Support safety and continuous improvement programs.
  • Demonstrate skills in management, communication, operational efficiency, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Report safety or sanitation concerns to supervisors.
  • Supervise staff and perform other relevant duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED; formal training or equivalent experience.
  • Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Culinary Arts or recognized certification from a National Association.
  • Minimum seven (7) years management experience in hospitality, food service, housekeeping, or remote camp environments.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record for the past three years.
  • Ability to instruct, train, multitask, and handle multiple responsibilities.
  • Obtain Alaska Food Workers Card and/or ServSafe Certification upon hire.
  • Pass pre-employment requirements including drug tests, physical, and other assessments.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to stand for 12 hours per shift and live in dormitory-style accommodations.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Environment includes indoor/outdoor settings, often exposed to arctic conditions, with moderate to loud noise levels. The role involves physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pushing, pulling, and performing physical tests to ensure fitness for duty. Travel by plane or bus to remote camps is required.
