Job summary

Allied Instructional Services is seeking a full-time braille transcriptionist and department lead. The role supports remote work and oversees the production of braille materials for schools and agencies.

Ideal candidates will have extensive braille coding knowledge, experience with embossers and 3D printing, and a background in proofreading and quality control. The team collaborates with independent contractors to meet timelines.

Qualifications

• Mastery of Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
• Mastery of Google Workspace.
• Mastery of Corel Draw, Duxbury, BrailleBlaster, Adobe Illustrator, etc.
• Proficiency with braille embossers, thermoform duplicator, scanning and OCR technology.
• Mastery of UEB code, including Nemeth and UEB Math/Science.
• Knowledge of a variety of braille codes including computer braille code and foreign language code.
• Experience designing tactile graphics for swell, embossed, and thermoform graphics.
• NLS certified transcriber with at least one of: literary braille, math braille, music braille, proofreading.
• CNIB certificate in UEB Technical (preferred).
• NBA certificate in textbook formatting (preferred).
• Ability to pass background check.
• Experience creating braille materials for school-aged students.
• Experience operating braille embossers, thermoform machine, copiers, etc.

Responsibilities

• Transcribe instructional materials into braille, large print, and other media.
• Determine appropriate formats, adapting for cognitive abilities and age.
• Proofread and verify accuracy of transcribed materials.
• Follow NFB translation guidelines and braille codes for materials.
• Prepare braille copies of tests, maps, textbooks, and other aids.
• Support off-site troubleshooting for transcription equipment.
• Order braille and large print books and maintain materials inventory.
• Catalog and maintain records of braille transcription and materials.
• Receive braille requests, assign to transcribers or produce in-house.
• Provide quotes for estimates for projects.
