Job summary

GitLab is hiring an Intermediate Backend Engineer to help build the Duo Agent Platform and AI Gateway, spanning the monolith (Ruby) and Python services. You will work with cross-functional teams to refine requirements, implement APIs, and improve testing and observability.

You will contribute to scalable backend design, performance improvements, and on-call rotations, shaping how AI agents interact with GitLab’s delivery lifecycle in a remote, async environment.

Qualifications

• Experience building and maintaining production Ruby on Rails applications with APIs and data models.
• Comfort across a mature codebase; familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends is a plus.
• Strong ability to design or extend REST and GraphQL APIs with scalable, maintainable contracts.

Responsibilities

• Develop, ship and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform in the GitLab monolith (Ruby) and the AI Gateway (Python).
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend and AI teams to refine requirements and deliver in small iterations.
• Design, implement and review GraphQL and REST APIs and the backend logic behind them with clear client contracts.
