Job summary

GitLab Inc. is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to help build the Duo Agent Platform, spanning a Ruby monolith and Python-based AI Gateway.

You will work with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable APIs, robust data models, and reliable background jobs in a remote, async environment. You’ll contribute to automated testing, API design, and AI-powered backend features, while keeping performance and security top of mind.

Qualifications

• Experience building production Ruby on Rails applications, including background jobs, APIs and data models.
• Familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends is a plus.
• Skill in designing or extending REST and/or GraphQL APIs with scalability and backward compatibility.
• Real enthusiasm for AI and hands-on experience using AI tools in daily work.
• Proven SQL and experience with PostgreSQL, writing efficient queries and data modeling.

Responsibilities

• Develop, ship and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform in the monolith (Ruby) and AI Gateway (Python).
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, backend and AI specialists to refine requirements.
• Design, implement and review GraphQL and REST APIs with clear contracts for clients.
• Improve automated testing (RSpec) and strengthen quality with faster feedback.
• Share standards and learnings to raise the bar for responsible AI integration.
• Join on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues and improve observability.
