Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Principal Engineer to help build the Duo Agent Platform, the orchestration layer for AI agents and flows across the software lifecycle. You will define technical direction, lead architectural decisions, and collaborate with multiple teams to deliver scalable, observable, and secure agent orchestration across GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience.
• 3+ years at Staff, Principal level or equivalent leadership.
• Experience with large language models and agent systems.
• Distributed systems expertise including fault tolerance and observability.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical direction.
• Ability to drive alignment across teams (Engineering, Product, Infrastructure, Security).

Responsibilities

• Define technical direction for Duo Agent Platform across multiple teams and translate into a multi‑quarter roadmap.
• Build and improve the orchestration layer for agents and flows, including lifecycle, tool calls, and concurrency.
• Hands-on work spanning POC to full implementation and architectural decisions.
• Participate in incident management and ensure high availability for GitLab.com.
• Write clear design documents, architecture narratives, and decision records to enable aligned decisions.
• Mentor Staff and Senior Engineers and raise the bar for cross-team collaboration.
