Job summary

Syms Strategic Group, LLC is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to lead a healthcare data platform modernization from MSSQL XML to a scalable AWS data architecture. You will enable business users to run SQL-based reports by designing the relational query layer and data models, while optimizing storage formats and costs.

The role requires strong AWS experience across S3, Athena, Glue, Redshift, OpenSearch, and CI/CD, with fluency in SQL and experience with XML data.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Track record of evaluating AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services experience (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda).
• Strong SQL to design relational layers over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data transformation.
• Familiarity with BI tooling (Athena/QuickSight/Redshift) and CI/CD tooling.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve from MSSQL XML object store to cloud-native AWS architecture for SQL-based reporting.
• Decide AWS data strategy and data storage/architecture (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design a reporting layer enabling business users to run SQL queries with familiar tools.
• Architect migration path for XML object store data into AWS, define storage formats and partitioning.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services and patterns.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate requirements into robust data models.
