Job summary

National Kidney Foundation, Inc. is seeking an Associate Managing Editor to oversee editorial and production workflows for the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, ensuring timely, high-quality manuscripts and adherence to journal policies.

The role collaborates with editors, authors, and Elsevier to optimize processes, improve reviewer experience, and support strategic initiatives in a fully remote, US-based setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 5–7 years of experience, preferably in STM publishing.
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and superior project management, problem-solving, and computer literacy.
• Ability to work independently and maintain meticulous attention to detail across complex workflows.
• Knowledge of editorial policies, journal style, and publication ethics.

Responsibilities

• Draft decision letters synthesizing editors’ comments, peer feedback, and policy requirements.
• Coordinate with editors to resolve editorial decisions and publication ethics concerns.
• Serve as liaison between authors and editors on revision-related questions.
• Conduct pre-acceptance compliance checks for figures, permissions, and documentation.
• Transmit final content to publisher accurately and timely after acceptance.
• Perform quality control of copyediting and proofs with Elsevier’s Journal Manager.
• Respond to inquiries post-publication and coordinate corrections with the publisher.
• Maintain and update manuscript handling procedures and templates.
• Troubleshoot Editorial Manager issues with vendor support.
• Analyze manuscript flow metrics to identify efficiency improvements.
• Collaborate with Marketing to promote content via social media and press releases.
• Generate custom reports and monitor industry trends.
• Participate in editorial/publisher conference calls and document follow-ups.
• Assist with special projects including supplements, NephMadness coordination, and internships.
