Job summary

Golden Gate University in San Francisco is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to serve as a trusted advisor to university leadership, providing practical, business-minded legal counsel across contracts, regulatory compliance, employment, governance, and international programs. Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree and active California Bar membership.
• 5+ years of legal experience advising higher education institutions.
• Experience in commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, employment, governance, and international matters.
• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills; ability to convey complex issues clearly.
• Ability to manage workload remotely in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including vendor/procurement, tech licenses, sponsorships, and consulting agreements.
• Advise on contract structure, risk allocation, and negotiation strategy; improve templates and processes.
• Advise on FERPA, Title IX, Title IV, federal financial aid, Clery Act, ADA/504, state authorization, and accreditation requirements.
• Monitor changes in federal/state law and guidance; ensure policies remain compliant.
• Develop and deliver training on legal risk and compliance topics.
• Counsel on employment and labor matters including hiring, performance management, investigations, accommodations, separations, and dispute resolution.
• Support governance and corporate matters; oversee outside counsel and oversee litigation and inquiries.
• Support international programs and partnerships including study-abroad, visa compliance, cross-border transactions, and export controls.
