Job summary

W.W. Norton & Company is seeking an Art Director for its award-winning Children’s Art Department. This full-time, remote role requires visiting the New York office at least once per publishing season for meetings and collaboration.

Lead design for 8–10 titles per list across picture books, middle grade, graphic novels, and fiction/non-fiction. Build and manage a team of illustrators and designers while ensuring top-tier presentation and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

• Strong portfolio showing versatility across genres, topics, ages, and formats in Children’s Publishing.
• Exceptional typographic sensibility and understanding of age-based design.
• Effective communicator while working in a remote environment.
• Awareness of prepress, color processes, and printing stages for children's books.
• Experience with publishers or freelance work in publishing is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage design process for 8–10 titles per season across picture books, middle grade, graphic novels, and more.
• Hire, manage, and direct freelance illustrators and designers; ensure budgets and timelines.
• Collaborate with production, editorial, and design teams throughout production.
• Maintain organized files and ensure font and art clearances across stages.
