Job summary

61st Street Service Corporation is seeking an AR Follow-Up Specialist III, Coding and Complex Denials, to support ColumbiaDoctors. The role handles complex coding denials, submits appeals, and follows up on unpaid claims, coordinating with CPCs to ensure payer guideline compliance. Occasional in‑office training may be required.

This remote position offers a competitive hourly rate and a clear path on the Revenue Cycle Career Ladder; residents of the Tri‑State area are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED certificate required.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in physician billing or third-party payer.
• Ability to understand contracts, benefits, exclusions, and payer rules.
• Strong customer service and patient-focused orientation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Epic or other billing systems experience preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, diagnosis, and coding preferred.
• Experience in an academic healthcare setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with CPCs to gather docs and overturn denials.
• Route complex cases to CPCs or supervisors as needed.
• Prepare and submit appeals with supporting documentation.
• Address incoming denials correspondence and respond promptly.
• Identify patterns in denials to inform process improvements.
• Contribute to denial management best practices.
• Assist supervisor with monitoring work queues and duties.
• Support training of new hires on coding workflows.
• Contact insurers, patients, or guarantors to obtain status.
• Update demographics and insurance coverage as appropriate.
• Address third-party sponsorship issues and follow up.
