Job summary

Pafford Medical Services, Inc. – Oklahoma City is seeking an Ambulance Coder to review ambulance patient care reports and assign accurate billing codes. The role requires interpreting EMS documentation, determining ambulance level of service, and ensuring medical necessity and compliance.

The coder will apply Medicare/Medicaid rules, review documentation for completeness, and work with billing and compliance teams to resolve discrepancies. Prior ambulance coding experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and EMS.
• Ability to interpret EMS clinical documentation and identify transport reason.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Confidential handling of protected health information.

Responsibilities

• Review ambulance PCRs and documentation for completeness and coding accuracy.
• Determine EMS level of service (BLS/ALS/SCT) based on patient condition and care.
• Assign ICD-10-CM diagnoses and HCPCS ambulance codes.
• Apply ambulance modifiers based on origin/destination and medical necessity.
• Ensure compliance with CMS, HIPAA, and payer policies.
• Collaborate with billing, clinical documentation, compliance, and revenue cycle teams.
