Job summary

UL Research Institutes is seeking a Research Scientist IV for a remote-based role focusing on AI safety across NLP, CV, SP, and AI reasoning. The candidate will design and evaluate advanced AI systems, create tool components, and contribute to scientific assessments of AI technologies.

The position requires a PhD in Computer Science with an AI focus and 4+ years of related research experience, with opportunities to collaborate across safety science and standards work within ULRI.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science with a focus in the applicable AI area of specialty plus 4 or more years of directly related research experience.

Responsibilities

• Conduct literature and open-source reviews in AI for the specialty area.
• Design, plan, and develop AI software utilizing digital safety best practices.
• Apply diagnostic and troubleshooting skills to resolve complex AI and software engineering challenges.
• Design, plan, and create statistically meaningful evaluations of AI systems in the specialty area.
• Prepare written component documentation for technical audiences.
• Work closely with team members to ensure processes are accurate and technically sound.
