Job summary

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. is seeking a Lead Research Scientist in AI for the DSRI in a remote role. You will direct NLP and LLM research, lead safety studies, and design experiments to advance Digital Safety's mission.

The role requires a PhD with extensive NLP/LLM experience, a track record of securing funding, and demonstrated leadership in research programs. You will collaborate with engineers and external partners to publish results and drive impact at leading conferences.

Qualifications

• PhD in CS with a focus on NLP or LLMs and at least 6 years of related research experience.
• Master's in CS focusing on NLP/LLMs with 8+ years of experience.
• Bachelor's in CS with NLP/LLMs focus and 12+ years of related research experience.

Responsibilities

• Direct advanced research in NLP and LLMs to support Digital Safety’s mission.
• Lead research in NLP/LLM safety, literature surveys, experimental design, data acquisition, analysis, and documentation.
• Establish criteria to resolve major problems in current programs and approaches.
• Demonstrate knowledge of state-of-the-art AI/SE principles to solve research problems.
• Manage test/evaluation programs to protect the public from AI harms.
• Lead and contribute to competitive research proposals, defining scope, methodology and deliverables to secure funding.
• Serve as principal investigator for independent AI testing programs with accountability for outcomes.
• Analyze results to identify causes and solutions and validate testing results.
• Plan and execute research challenges, using evaluation tools to advance NLP/LLM safety.
• Propose/host workshops at leading AI safety conferences to discuss methods and results.
• Stay current by reading papers and attending conferences and contribute to cross-functional initiatives.
