Job summary

August Mack Environmental, Inc. is seeking an experienced Environmental Field Technician for our Indianapolis operation. The role focuses on remedial construction tasks, soil excavation/removal, demolition, and site preparation in a construction environment with heavy equipment.

Expect 75-100% travel to client sites across multiple states, 90% field work, and manual labor including lifting 50–100 pounds. OSHA HAZWOPER certification is preferred and training is provided if needed.

Qualifications

  • Experience with deep excavations (10 feet or deeper) and trench safety.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be physically capable of operating vehicles and lifting 50–100 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple states and work outdoors in varying conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators, dozers, loaders, backhoes, and other equipment safely.
  • Mobilize to and from project sites and prepare job sites.
  • Verify utility locates are completed and marked before work.
  • Perform routine maintenance and daily inspections on equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD SERVICES

Requires minimum of 20+ years of earth moving equipment operation experience. OSHA HAZWOPER (40 hour) certification is a plus.

This position is performed in a construction environment and involves working around heavy equipment. This role requires frequent travel to client sites in multiple states, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and the ability to safely lift and carry materials weighing between 50 and 100 pounds.

Responsible for performing various aspects of field work related to: Remedial Construction – soil excavation/removal; remediation systems installation; demolition; and clean construction. Includes site grading; site capping; underground storage tank (UST) removals and chemical mixing operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Safely operate excavators, dozers, front end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, etc.
  • Load trucks and other job preparation activities; assist others as needed.
  • Mobilize to and from project job sites.
  • Verify public and private utility locates have been completed and are appropriately marked before performing any work.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles in the proper manner; maintain in a clean and good working order after each use.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections of equipment and machinery to verify safe operating conditions, identify defects or maintenance needs, and promptly report any issues that may affect functionality or safety to the Manager.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on small equipment and tools, including generators, pumps, saws, and hand tools; assist with moving filled drums, concrete cutting activities, heavy lifting, and dry or wet decontamination of heavy equipment and digging buckets as required.
  • Perform daily record keeping and reporting of time/hours billed and expenses.
  • Work safely and within EFS standards on safety practices; maintain safety as a top jobsite priority; report all incidents and/or near misses.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as provided by the company; some activities performed in Level C PPE with respirator.
  • Maintain a professional and clean appearance.
  • Provide great customer service (be personable, respectful, and helpful to clients).
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Recommended: OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification preferred; training provided if not currently certified.

Required: Experience with deep excavations (10 feet or deeper), including the use of double-stacked trench boxes and other trench protective systems. Must possess a thorough understanding of excavation and trench safety practices and have the ability to perform finish grading with heavy equipment to meet project requirements.

Additional Requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and physically capable of operating vehicles safely. This classification requires the use of a personal or company vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
