The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Services, Technical Supervisor, and Shift Supervisors, provides and administers all aspects of Respiratory Care Therapy and supportive equipment as stated in the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of an RRT at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Assisting in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders in critical and non-critical areas, following a physician’s prescription.
- Performing cardiopulmonary evaluations, monitoring, respiratory therapy treatments, procedures, and patient and family education.
- Acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting data from physiological specimens; performing diagnostic tests, studies, and research related to the cardiopulmonary system.
- Administering and monitoring medical gases, mechanical ventilation, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation as prescribed.
- Applying scientific principles for the identification, prevention, and rehabilitation of cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
- Administering therapeutic respiratory procedures and setting up related equipment as prescribed.
- Recording pertinent information in the electronic medical record system (EPIC).
- Setting up, verifying, operating, and monitoring respiratory equipment.
- Participating in the management of patients on life support systems, including adjustments based on blood gas results.
- Responding to emergency and trauma codes.
- Overseeing the clinical performance of Certified Respiratory Care Technicians to ensure compliance with policies.
- Maintaining ventilators and circuits per infection control policies.
- Running quality controls on blood gas analyzers.
- Monitoring and changing manifold cylinders, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen.
- Cleaning and assembling respiratory equipment per infection control protocols.
- Modifying and delivering care tailored to patient needs, considering age, culture, and communication abilities.
- Performing physical tasks such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and standing for extended periods.
- Adhering to organizational competencies and performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care program.
- Associate degree.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all clinical aspects of Respiratory Care.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- NJ Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- NJ Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.
