Responsibilities

A day in the life of an RRT at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

• Assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders in critical and non-critical areas, pursuant to a physician’s prescription.
• Performs cardiopulmonary evaluations, monitors, respiratory therapy treatments, procedures, and educates patients and families.
• Responsible for analyzing data from physiological specimens, diagnostic tests, and research related to cardiopulmonary and neurophysiological studies.
• Administers and monitors medical gases, mechanical ventilation, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
• Utilizes scientific principles to identify, prevent, remediate, research, and rehabilitate cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
• Sets up, verifies, operates, and monitors respiratory equipment as prescribed.
• Records all pertinent information in the electronic medical record system, EPIC.
• Participates in managing patients on life support, recommending adjustments based on blood gas results and weaning studies.
• Responds to emergency and trauma codes.
• Oversees the clinical performance of Certified Respiratory Care Technicians to ensure compliance.
• Maintains ventilators and circuits according to infection control policies.
• Performs quality control on blood gas analyzers.
• Monitors and manages respiratory manifolds and cylinders.
• Ensures respiratory equipment is cleaned and disinfected per infection control protocols.
• Adapts care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations, communicating effectively at their level.
• Lifts at least 35 lbs., pushes/pulls 165 lbs., and stands for at least 6 hours daily.
• Adheres to organizational competencies and performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care program.
• Associate degree required.
• Comprehensive knowledge of clinical aspects of Respiratory Care.

Licenses and Certifications

Required:

• NJ Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate
• AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) Certification
• NJ Respiratory Care Practitioner License

Preferred:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
