Our 10,000 square-foot Pediatric Emergency Department is designed to care for patients from infancy through teenagers. We are the only designated Level I pediatric trauma center in the region (the first in Virginia). The department features 12 large exam rooms, recliners for families, and 4 fast-track rooms for treating and releasing children with conditions such as ear infections, colds, and rashes. Our Child Life Specialists are dedicated to reducing stress for children and their families by providing age-appropriate explanations and support throughout the care process. The team includes emergency physicians, Nurse Practitioners, award-winning Nurses, Social Workers, and others, with up to 40% of pediatric emergency patients admitted to the hospital.
Job Description:
- Clinical Nurse I: Integrates technical skills and knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assists in prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision, provides direction and education, and begins to develop leadership skills. Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans, safely administers medications, and recognizes potential interactions.
- Clinical Nurse II: Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applies knowledge to specific patient populations, recognizes and responds to changes in patient conditions, mobilizes resources, provides leadership, and delivers age-specific care with accurate documentation and medication safety.
- Clinical Nurse III: Shows advanced clinical knowledge, anticipates patient needs, serves as a role model, and provides comprehensive, age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans. Ensures medication safety and proper documentation.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state
- AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment
Experience:
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12-24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years clinical experience
Preferred Experience:
- Clin I: Experience as LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting
- Clin II & III: Academic healthcare experience, similar patient population experience
Education/Training:
- Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred
- All RNs without a Bachelor’s degree must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered
- Clin III: Certification in a specialty area preferred
Additional Requirements:
- Follows physician/licensed independent provider orders
- Practices within Virginia nursing regulations and adheres to ANA Code of Ethics and institutional policies
- Supervises and delegates to team members as appropriate
- Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; schedules may vary
