Emergency Department Nurse Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Nurse Manager is responsible for the integration, facilitation, and coordination of the management and clinical activities of the nursing unit(s) with twenty-four hour accountability. Provides management and clinical support to other nursing units and hospital-wide as required. Serves as a professional role model, mentor, and clinical resource/educator for nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Develops unit goals and objectives with staff based on analysis of clinical and managerial processes to improve patient outcomes and foster a culture of excellence. Represents the unit and acts as a liaison to internal and external customers. Participates in professional development activities and hospital-wide committees. Demonstrates various management styles. Participates in unit budget development, monitoring, and variance analysis.

II. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program. A Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) or a Master’s of Nursing (MSN) is required.
  2. Must possess a current Registered Nurse license from the State of Virginia or be awaiting reciprocity.
  3. Maintains current CPR certification.
  4. Requires knowledge of organization and operation of a patient care unit and nursing care techniques, generally acquired through three to five years of professional nursing experience, with increasing responsibility in the relevant specialty area.
  5. Broad knowledge of clinical, psychosocial, and pathophysiological theories related to nursing diagnosis and treatment. Ability to perform a range of nursing techniques, including non-routine procedures, typically gained through three to five years of professional nursing experience.
  6. Previous supervisory or charge nurse experience requiring knowledge of financial management and personnel supervision.
