The Charge Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse responsible and accountable for unit operational activities. Using the nursing process and clinical knowledge, this role coordinates nursing and interprofessional team members to develop and maintain an environment that promotes clinical excellence and customer satisfaction, while optimizing resource efficiency and productivity. The Charge Nurse adjusts schedules and patient assignments based on acuity, patient population, resources, and care design. They supervise staff, provide clinical support, and assume management responsibilities in the absence of the nurse manager or clinical care leader.

Minimum Education and Qualifications

1. Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree (4-year)
2. Specialty/Major: Nursing – BSN must be obtained within 2 years of hire
3. Licensure/Certification: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing school and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia
4. Experience: 18-24 months of clinical experience with knowledge of nursing diagnosis, treatment, policies, procedures, standards, systems, and equipment
5. Skills and Abilities: Demonstrate management/leadership skills, teaching abilities, and understanding of group dynamics. Must be a Clinical Nurse II or submit a portfolio at the next eligible submission date.
6. Preferred Experience: Prior work as a charge nurse or in a supervisory role is preferred.
