Job summary

UP Health System - Portage is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for our General Surgery Clinic. This full-time role features 1.0 FTE (80 hours per pay period) with Monday through Friday, 8-hour day shifts.

Join a team dedicated to delivering high-quality, compassionate care in a community hospital setting. You will perform plan of care interventions, document care, monitor patient status, educate families, and collaborate with physicians and staff to coordinate transfers and discharges.

Qualifications

• Active Michigan RN license (or eligible).
• Associate degree in Nursing; BSN preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Influenza vaccination or declination required within hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs plan of care interventions including medication administration and specimen collection.
• Documents patient care provided and monitors patient condition.
• Coordinates care with the care team across disciplines, including transfers and discharge.
• Provides patient and family education tailored to age and culture.
• Advocates for patient well-being and delegates tasks to qualified staff.
• Performs required prior authorizations for tests and procedures.

How you'll contribute

• Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.
• Documents patient care given.
• Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, nursing home, patient, and family.
• Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
• Delegates patient care activities to appropriately qualified staff.
• Performs prior authorizations on tests, procedures, medications, etc. that are required by the patient's insurance.
• Performs other job duties as assigned.

What we're looking for

• Applicants should have a current Michigan RN license (or attain within 90 days of hire) and possess an associate degree from an accredited nursing school (bachelor's degree preferred).
• Additional requirements include:
  • Basic Life Support certification is required (available upon hire)
  • Annual Influenza Vaccination or Declination Required
