Job description

Overview

To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values - integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion - must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical frameworks established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes. Nurses practice within a framework that emphasizes "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability," valuing Nursing Professional Governance, and utilizing evidence and data to support practice with the patient and family at the center.

The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge of their healthcare situation in all aspects of care.
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: Guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), the RN demonstrates competent nursing care through assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This includes collecting pertinent data, analyzing it, developing and modifying care plans, coordinating care, promoting health and safety, and evaluating progress.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN adheres to ANA Standards (2015) covering ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is responsible for professional actions and leadership within their role.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. All new RNs must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical program. The foundational job description applies to all RNs.

Licensure: Current RN license in Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.

Skills: As above, with encouragement for career advancement through SPIRE.
