Job summary

Duke University Health System's General Pediatrics Unit in Durham, NC seeks a registered nurse to provide patient-centered care on a fast-paced, 8-bed unit expanding in 2027. Expect 3-4 patients per nurse with support from leadership, on a 36-hour weekly schedule across day/night shifts.

Requirements include RN licensure in NC, BSN or ADN/Nursing Diploma, and BLS. Competitive relocation assistance is available for qualifying moves.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (or higher) or ADN/Nursing Diploma.
  • Current NC RN licensure or compact licensure to practice in NC.
  • BLS Certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients per plans of care and policies.
  • Plan, provide and document nursing care using the nursing process under supervision.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in patient care.
  • Maintain environment of care and manage resources to complete care timely.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and seek opportunities for learning.
  • Support staff development and participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work.

What you can expect

Location: 2301 Erwin Rd. Durham, NC 27705

The General Pediatrics Unit is an 8-bed acute care unit that is projected to expand to 16 beds in January 2027. The unit provides care for a diverse pediatric population with a wide range of general medical and surgical needs. Most patients on this unit will have an anticipated length of stay of three days or less. RNs will care for an assignment of 3-4 patients with support from a charge nurse and nursing care assistant.

Schedule
  • Full Time: 3, 12 hour shifts. 7 a.m./7 p.m., Day/Night rotating. 36 hours per week.

How you will make an impact
  • Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.
  • Participate in maintaining the environment of care, including equipment and material resources. Prioritize work organization and identify resources available to assist in completing components of care in a timely manner.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners. Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
What you will need
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) OR Associate's Degree in Nursing OR Nursing Diploma program.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS Certification required.
