Job summary

Duke University in Durham, NC, seeks a Registered Nurse for the General Pediatrics Unit. The 8-bed unit cares for a diverse pediatric population; 3–4 patient assignments with a charge nurse and support staff, full-time schedule including day/night rotations.

Responsibilities include planning and delivering nursing care, supervising staff, and documenting care per physician orders. Requires BSN/ASN or Diploma and NC RN license, with BLS certification.

Qualifications

  • Must have 1 full year of nursing experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN/ASN/diploma).
  • Current NC RN license or compact licensure to practice in NC required.
  • BLS Certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide professional nursing care per medical and nursing plans.
  • Supervise and document nursing care using the nursing process.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise other licensed and unlicensed staff.
  • Act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or entire unit.
  • Monitor environment of care and ensure equipment readiness.
  • Support professional development and precept new staff.
  • Engage in performance improvement activities as appropriate.

What you can expect

Location: 2301 Erwin Rd. Durham, NC 27705

The General Pediatrics Unit is an 8-bed acute care unit that is projected to expand to 16 beds in January 2027. The unit provides care for a diverse pediatric population with a wide range of general medical and surgical needs. Most patients on this unit will have an anticipated length of stay of three days or less. RNs will care for an assignment of 3-4 patients with support from a charge nurse and nursing care assistant.

Schedule
  • Full Time: 3, 12 hour shifts. 7 a.m./7 p.m., Day/Night rotating. 36 hours per week.

How you will make an impact
  • Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of the patient's baseline needs and response to care.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned.
  • Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
What you will need
  • Prefer nurses with 1 year of pediatric experience or 1 year of adult Med/Surg experience.
  • Must have 1 full year of nursing experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) OR Associate's Degree in Nursing OR Nursing Diploma program.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS Certification required.
