Job Description

Job Summary

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), under the direct supervision of the Behavior Analyst, assists in the development and implementation of behavior intervention programs for students with challenging behavioral needs across a wide variety of age ranges at various sites throughout the district, monitors and collects data on behavior and documents progress, and collaborates with school staff to coach and implement behavior interventions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Understand and apply the basic principles of ABA in classroom settings as directed
• Effectively communicate with team members
• Provide skills instruction to students using behavior reduction protocols based on principles of ABA
• Assist with the implementation and monitoring of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and skill acquisition programs under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCBA
• Provide modeling and training to teachers and paraprofessionals on how to implement behavior reduction protocols
  • Describe behavior functions and appropriate preventative, replacement, and responsive strategies based on behavior functions
  • Model scenarios across environments and staff
  • Assist staff in implementing appropriate de‑escalation and responsive strategies for problem behavior
• Assist BCBA with observations and data collection for assessments
• Collect and monitor ongoing behavior data
• Assist teachers and paraprofessionals on behavior data collection measures
• Assist BCBA in analyzing and interpreting data
• Assist in the development of reinforcement/preference assessments
• Implement and promote positive behavior intervention supports throughout the District, including systems at individual school sites
• Assist in creating and/or adapting classroom tasks, materials, and curriculum to meet students’ educational and behavioral needs
• When required, provide intervention for students demonstrating unsafe behaviors
• Assist in providing professional development to educate staff on general ABA skills/principles and evidence based practices
• Additional related tasks as assigned by the BCBA, Director of Special Services, or other administration

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and evidence based practices and interventions (e.g., Discrete Trial Training, Pivotal Response Training, Social Skills Training, Self‑Regulation Teaching, Functional Communication Training, positive reinforcement, extinction, etc.)
• Knowledge of prompting and fading procedures
• Understanding of and familiarity with the characteristics for a wide variety of disabilities including, but not limited to, autism, intellectual disability, emotional behavioral disorders, and ADHD
• Knowledge of crisis and behavior management strategies and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
• Basic curriculum knowledge including mathematics, reading, and writing
• Understand the needs of students with learning, developmental, and behavioral disabilities and effectively relate to learning situations
  • Be flexible, creative, and utilize problem‑solving approaches based on situations
• Maintain the security and confidentiality of records and information
• Exercise tact, patience, courtesy, and good judgment in dealing with students and staff
• Exercise flexibility to respond to emergency and/or unforeseen situations
• Demonstrate enthusiasm, as well as relatability to work with students and staff of all ages

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Age 21+
• Maintain current certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) issued by the Board Analyst Certification Board (BACB)
• Complete district provided crisis intervention training
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Clean background check

Physical Requirements

• Be able to walk short distances to escort children between classrooms and activities
• Be able to sit, stand, lean, reach, bend, lift (50 lbs.) and kneel to assist students and apply appropriate crisis intervention techniques
• Be able to walk on uneven surfaces (playground)
• Be able to walk up and down stairs
• Be outside in all weather conditions for assigned duty
• In district travel
